Frequently Asked Questions:
Refugees
Q: How long do refugee claims take from start to finish?
A: The law states that hearings should take place within 45 – 60 days after starting a claim. Currently the refugee board is focusing on eliminating a backlog of claims and is continuing to hire more members but some cases take as long as a year and a half or longer to complete.
Q: What can I do to improve my chances of being allowed to stay in Canada?
A: Getting a job, enrolling your kids in school, and volunteering in social initiatives are all good ways to improve your chances of becoming a Canadian.
Q: How can I make money whilst I’m a refugee claimant?
A: As a refugee claimant you are allowed to work in Canada. Whilst you are waiting for your claim to be processed you will receive health insurance and may be eligible for social aid to help pay for housing and legal aid to pay for your lawyer.
Students
Q: What do I need to do to get a student visa?
A: You need to be accepted to one of Canada’s approved colleges or universities and establish that you have sufficient financial resources to support yourself and pay tuition fees.
